Code of Ethics. The Interpreter
provides a means for the deaf and hearing consumers
to communicate
converts messages from Sign Language to spoken
English and vice versa
provides consumers with the information necessary
for a smooth interaction to occur
is hired to serve both hearing and deaf consumers
acts as a cultural mediator, interpreting cultural
information crucial for the parties involved to
     adequately understand the spirit of the messages
being relayed
does not act as an assistant to or advocate for
consumers while on the job in the interpreting role;
     however, interpreters may be hired to consult
or act as advocates separate from specific
     interpreting duties.
The Interpreting
Process:
the hearing person speaks
the interpreter hears the message
the interpreter processes and conceptualizes the meaning of the
message
